Understanding Planetary Transits in Vedic Astrology

In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), planetary transits (Gochar) describe the current movement of planets through the zodiac signs. While your birth chart (Kundli) represents the planetary positions at your moment of birth, transits show where the planets are right now — and how their current positions interact with your natal chart to create opportunities, challenges, and turning points.

The most impactful transits are those of the slow-moving planets: Saturn (Shani, ~2.5 years per sign), Jupiter (Guru, ~1 year per sign), and Rahu-Ketu (lunar nodes, ~18 months per sign). These transits create long-term themes that shape career trajectories, relationships, health patterns, and spiritual growth over months and years. Faster planets like Mercury, Venus, and Mars create shorter but more immediate effects.

Saturn transits are considered the most significant in Vedic astrology. The famous Sade Sati (7.5-year Saturn period) and Dhaiyya (2.5-year Saturn period) are determined by Saturn's transit relative to your Moon sign. Saturn currently transits Pisces (2025–2028), affecting all 12 signs differently based on where Pisces falls in your chart.

Jupiter transits bring expansion, wisdom, and opportunities to the house it occupies. Jupiter is the great benefic — its transit through a favourable house can bring career growth, marriage, children, wealth, and spiritual progress. Jupiter currently transits Gemini (2025–2026), particularly benefiting communication, education, and networking.

Mercury retrograde occurs 3–4 times per year and is one of the most widely discussed astrological events. During retrograde, Mercury appears to move backward, causing disruptions in communication, technology, travel, and contracts. While not catastrophic, Mercury retrograde periods require extra care with important communications and decisions.

Eclipses (Grahan) are considered the most powerful single-day events in Vedic astrology. Solar eclipses (Surya Grahan) and lunar eclipses (Chandra Grahan) act as cosmic reset points, triggering sudden changes, revelations, and karmic completions. Traditional Vedic practices include fasting, mantra chanting, and avoiding new beginnings during eclipse periods.
